[Podcast] How to Build a Promotional Platform with Your Blog

by Dave Charest

Ken DavenportBroadway producer Ken Davenport blogs over at The Producer’s Perspective.

Ken’s blog is one of the first places I send people thinking about starting a blog. Why?

Because over the years Ken has successfully built an extremely popular blog that also serves as a promotional platform for the projects he’s working on. If you look closely there’s a lot to learn from what’s happening on The Producer’s Perspective.

Recently, we had a chance to chat about his blogging journey.

Here’s what we cover in this episode of New Media Conversations

We explore three key areas in this conversation:

  1. Why Start a Blog?
  2. Developing a Content Strategy
  3. Promoting Your Projects on the Blog

Grab yourself a tasty beverage, a pen and some paper. You’ll want to take some notes.

Dave and Ken:
Superb PodCast – love the singing!
Here is what struck and stuck with me on the PodCast:
- Be first
- Be good
- Niche – find yours
- Giveaways – popular
- Spray and play: My example of a colossal bad one that led to the downfall of many symphony orchestras in NA – (my experience in YVR) – Danny Newman Subscribe Now! Short term gain equaled long-term pain; and at the end of the day reached only a fickle following of one time, one season subscribers.
- Be true to yourself and share your self
- Meet up in person with people who follow your Blog – RIGHT ON! In your face and face to face is exciting for people to have what I call – “All Access” this is magical especially in the entertainment and performing arts industries.
Thanks again for sharing!
Cheers!
Susan

Nice recap Susan.

For me it was really great to hear Ken’s personal mission statement. The one word for me in it was “amplify” and you can really see how he does that. Good stuff! Thanks for listening.

You should really post a download link, and a subscribe link, so it’s easier to get your show into ipods, phones, etc.

Thanks Gordon. I do have a subscribe links at the bottom. And the latest update to the power press player makes the player visible on phones, as far as I know. Is there something else I’m missing?

Great interview with Ken. I’ve been following his blog for about a year and almost aways something of interest there. And his blog inspired me to start my own “Lapis Loquens Blog.” My passion is more on the writing and craft side of theatre; seeing how Ken’s passion comes through on his blog is a model for all of us.

Thanks for the comment and for listening Duane. Congrats on the blog too.

What does “Lapis Loquens” mean?

I was kind of struck by the idea of blogging being intrisically rewarding. Which makes sense, but was not something that ever actually occured to me. I’ve waffled about the idea of starting a blog, namely because I’m not entirely sure what I really have to say and because I imagine I would find it tedious. It was interesting to hear it framed as being rewarding. And generous.

Thanks for the comment Cotton.

It is definitely something you need to commit to. Once you have some purpose behind it it becomes a lot more rewarding.

Thanks for listening. :)
