Have you ever watched an actor try to act?
The thing is if the actor is trying to “act,” chances are it’s not very good acting. The performance most likely feels forced and unnatural. Inauthentic.
But what happens when the same actor stops trying to “act” and instead shifts her focus to her partner on stage?
It now becomes about the other person. The actor is now out of her own head. She’s responding to what’s happening with her partner. It becomes real, honest and authentic because it is.
The same can be said about marketing. Just like the actor needs to stop acting, the marketer needs to stop “marketing.” Instead, listen and respond to what’s going on with your audience then you’re able to create and share things that are interesting, helpful, or entertaining to them.
This is where you earn their attention. And you do so by being authentic. By being helpful.
This simple shift in thinking also allows you to stop having all those negative thoughts about marketing.
How do you find authenticity in your marketing? Tell me in the comments.

You have said what so many forget, authenticity is the key to our marketing. When we are authentic in our marketing relationships, the money flows. Plain and simple. Good post!

Spot on, short and helpful. I just came across your blog after looking for a tutorial on adding a twitter button to wordpress.
Yes there is nothing more off putting than feeling like you are being marketed. It just makes customers feel a bit weirded out because it is so obvious. Authenticity is everything, great blog.
