“You punk!”
That’s how an email I received two weeks ago started. I got a bit nervous. I thought, “Uh-oh. What did I do now?”
You know that funny feeling you get in your stomach. Well, I had that too.
“Give me that report you’re talking about!” Wait a minute. That’s actually good news. Phew. So what’s with all the yelling?
The Wicked Smaht subscriber went on…
“It really, really worked! I was thinking, what on earth am I reading this for! But I couldn’t stop reading!”
Well, that’s the cool thing about drama isn’t it?
It creates tension. It’s exciting. Emotional. Unexpected.
You can’t help but get sucked in. And the next thing you know you’re invested and you’re not even sure why.
Why do you get sucked in?
In a word: curiosity. It’s irresistible. Then it’s like you’re hypnotized. You can’t help but pay attention.
Remember when there was an argument in the schoolyard? Wasn’t there a huge group of kids gathered around? What about the last time you saw an accident on the highway? It caused a bit of traffic didn’t it? Even when it was barely an accident at all.
Well, drama shouldn’t be an accident for you
Whether you’re writing an email, a blog post, or copy for your website–look for the drama. Tell a story. You know this already.
In fact, I bet you know drama better than I do. But when it’s time to do some “marketing” you get all queasy. You forget about using the drama.
And that’s a big mistake
Because then you’re just like everyone else. And that’s cool too. But I’d bet you’re not like everyone else.
When you find the drama you begin to cut through the clutter. You set yourself so far above everyone else that it’s not even funny. And you do so without any of that crap that makes your skin crawl.
So lead the way by sharing the stories that make you special. It’s the stories and drama that people
connect with.
So go ahead be a punk
Just don’t forget to add a dose of drama. You just might catch someone’s attention long enough to inspire their day.
What do you think? Does drama pull you in?
