My wife and I recently bought a used Honda Odyssey.
We love it.
During the research phase we saw them everywhere. EVERYWHERE.
The Odyssey shone like a flashing beacon.
Coincidence?
Sure, we were on high alert. But still.
It’s actually, kinda powerful when you think about it.
Because we were actively looking for them we noticed them more.
What would people notice if they were looking for you online?
One of the first things I like to do with clients is show them what happens when we turn to the almighty search engine. Go ahead Google yourself. What do you find?
Three questions come to mind…
- Can people even find you when they’re looking?
- What do people discover when they find you?
- Does what they find represent what you’d like them to find?
You know people these days do hit Google first when it comes to finding out more information about someone. It’s important that you be there. If not, you might as well be invisible.
How to be visible instead
If people don’t see you, you might as well not exist. Online, the easiest way to be visible is to have a blog (let’s assume blog also means website). This home base is important as it’s the official representation you’ve set up for yourself. But there is something else to consider…sightings.
Remember when we saw the Odyssey everywhere? This also led us to believe the Odyssey was a good choice due the high frequency of sightings.
Why sightings are important
It’s one thing to hear what they need from you, but it’s another entirely to hear it from others. So if your name pops up in multiple locations your credibility increases.
Make sure people are getting what they need to get
People are often just looking for confirmation. So if you pop up in places that confirm what you’d like people to see, that’s good!
Another reason it’s good to pop up other places
This helps you stay top of mind. You want to be there when people are looking for you. But this happens on their time not yours. And you never know when that may be.
For example, I was recently asked to do some radio interviews for a local radio station (I’ll have those clips for you in another post soon). Why did this happen? Simply because I was top of mind when someone needed a marketing person.
Sometimes your friends know someone who could use what you offer?
But without a consistent presence they could forget about you. Then you miss those opportunities.
Remember do things that allow you to be everywhere. EVERYWHERE. Or at least seem like you’re everywhere.
Then when someone is in the market for what you offer they’ll find you as the person to go to.
